Species Spotlight: Quercus look Kotschy

quercus_look.jpg

Quercus look is one of the least-known oaks of the arid mountains of the Middle East. It grows on Mount Hermon and in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains and Lebanon Mountains.

Species Spotlight: Quercus douglasii Hook. & Arn.

qd.jpg

Quercus douglasii is an endemic California oak tree, affectionately called “the blue oak”.

Species Spotlight: Quercus acutissima subsp. kingii Menitsky

Quercus acutissima subsp. kingii

Quercus acutissima Carruth. is a species whose natural distribution covers a vast territory in East and Southeast Asia, from central Nepal in the west to the Pacific coast of Honshu in the east, and from northern Szechwan to central Burma, northern Thailand, and Laos in the south.

Species Spotlight: Quercus rugosa Née

Given its rugged beauty and hardiness, Quercus rugosa is recommended for gardens, parks, and arboreta in most regions. As it grows naturally in such an extended area and across a variety of habitats and altitudes, there is also scope for further experimentation with seed sourced from different provenances.

Cultivar Close-up: Thread and Lace

As Co-Registrar of oak cultivars I think it’s important to periodically remind members about some of the exceptional selections of oaks that are out there in collections and nurseries. In the interest of appealing to a broader group, I thought I would select a cultivar from the Old World and one from the New.

Species Spotlight: Quercus semecarpifolia Sm.

Quercus semecarpifolia, commonly known as brown oak, is the main forest-forming evergreen tree species from upper temperate to subalpine regions (2,500–3,300 m) in Western Himalaya.

Species Spotlight: Quercus hypoleucoides A. Camus

For this Species Spotlight we train our follow spot on an oak that is quite a star of the quercine scene: Quercus hypoleucoides (stage name: silverleaf oak).
