IOS Webinar #14: Patterns of Gene Flow in Oak Evolution, and the Oaks of Vietnam

Event Date:
Wednesday, 18 November 2026

The IOS is pleased to announce our next virtual event, again co-hosted with the Global Conservation Consortium for Oak (GCCO), which will take place over Zoom at 9 am US Central Time on November 18, 2026.

In this webinar, Kieran Althaus, a University of Chicago PhD candidate and an affiliate of The Morton Arboretum’s Science and Conservation Department, will examine how gene flow—specifically through hybridization and introgression—drives the evolution and speciation of oak trees. The presentation will investigate whether gene flow is a typical part of the speciation process, and whether the success rate of producing viable hybrids is linked to how species diverge, offering crucial new insights for tree breeding and forest conservation.

During the second part of the webinar, Dr. Nguyen Van Ngoc of Dalat University (Trường Đại học Đà Lạt) in Lam Dong Province, Vietnam, will share an overview of the oaks of Vietnam, highlighting research and conservation activities.
