Abstract

A conservation symposium was held in Taipei in March 2023, to draw attention to the need to conserve the Fagaceae forests of southeastern Taiwan. Five international guests, representing institutions in the UK and the US, including the International Oak Society, were invited to participate. Prior to the event, they travelled to southeastern Taiwan to visit the threatened forests. Here is presented an account of this trip and the symposium that followed it, a summary of the biological significance of Fagaceae forests in Taiwan and the conservation challenges they face, as well as a review of the conservation efforts undertaken and the results achieved so far.
