Australian Oak Open Days 2025

Thursday, 8 May 2025 to Tuesday, 13 May 2025

This multiday event will include visits to oak collections in Victoria, New South Wales, and Canberra. Peter Berbee of Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria is designing the itinerary, which has been timed to coincide with peak autumn color.

Registration for this event is now open. Please write to the Tours and Events Committee if you are interested in participating. Registration will close April 15, 2025.

Preliminary itinerary

Day 0: Wednesay, May 7

Arrive in Canberra; attend the Friends of ACT Trees "Tree Week" Dinner (optional)

Day 1: Thursday, May 8

Explore Canberra's oak trees, National Arboretum, Royal Caberra Golf Course oak collection, 1923 Parliamentary Oaks at Parliament House

Accommodation: Canberra

Day 2: Friday, May 9

Drive to Braidwood, New South Wales

Visit to IOS member Peter Marshall's oak plantings and black truffle plantation (including a truffle hunt!)

Accommodation: Canberra

Day 3: Saturday, May 10

Travel to Melbourne (drive or fly)

Accommodation: Melbourne

Day 4: Sunday, May 11

Drive to Dunkeld, Victoria; visit Mereweather Arboretum, Bill Funk's oak collection

Accommodation: Hamilton

Day 5: Monday, May 12

Drive to Melbourne

In Melbourne: Visit the oak collection at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne

Accommodation: Melbourne

Day 6: Tuesday, May 13

Drive to Hoddles Creek, visit the late Geoff Bogle's oak collection and arboretum

If time permits, visit old growth Eucalyptus regnans, some of the tallest flowering trees in Australia and the world

Return to Melbourne
