Abstract
Oak trees are host to an extraordinary number of other species from across the Tree of Life:
birds, insects, fungi, lichens, etc.
One of the group of organisms whose life cycle is entirely dependent on oaks are the cynipid wasps of the family Cynipidae, with more than 1,400 species worldwide. Different species in this family exhibit various degrees of host specificity: some living only on the representatives of one section of the genus Quercus, some on only one species, and some only on one single tree.
There is a great deal of exploration still to be done in this fascinating world of cynipid wasps.
Keywords
