An oak in cultivation as Quercus eugeniifolia has now been described as a new species (Novon June 2011).

Chevithorne Barton in Devon is home to one of the two UK National Collection for the genus Quercus. It was built by IOS member Michael Heathcoat Amory. His collection is one of the most comprehensive oak collections in the world. You can now query the inventory of the collection on the recently launched Web site: http://www.oaksofchevithornebarton.com/index.cfm. For many records, pictures have been made available on line.

There is debate over the existence of Quercus cerris x Q. robur hybrids. Such intermediates have been documented in the UK with characteristic Q. cerris features (persistent stipules and pubescence), but with a more Q. robur-like leaf shape. These possible hybrids may simply be Q. cerris when considering its variable leaf morphology, and also the relatively long phylogenetic distance between these two Quercus species, meaning a lower likelihood of a such a hybrid arising.

Forest ecosystem genomics and adaptation

In San Lorenzo del Escorial (Madrid, Spain), the aim of this international conference is to present new scientific findings in the area of ecosystem genomics, which addresses the structure and evolution of gene diversity at the population and community levels. The conference will focus on the function and diversity of genes of adaptive significance in the context of climate change. Adaptation of forest ecosystems will be analyzed from an evolutionary perspective and illustrated by examples on trees and their associated species.
